Description:

Gretel came to us as an owner surrender. We rapidly discovered that she has some IVDD issues. She's had an episode where the rear legs went down, which responded to medication and confinement. She was fine for some time, then has another episode that caused her walk to go ataxic and was also painful. At that time we investigated surgical intervention but were informed that the incident didn't appear to be a ruptured disc, it was inflammation causing pressure due to a stenotic spine. We once again got her past this with meds and confinement. From that point on, we have kept her in an x-pen when she is not directly under our supervision, and we leash walk for supervised restroom breaks. She has adapted to the restriction but there is a very strong possibility that she will have another incident and there is no guarantee she will recover fully. Anyone considering adopting her must be at home with her most of the time, needs experience with this condition, an environment with no steps, a suitable area with no jump or climb opportunities, and a reasonable understanding that treatment for this condition is extremely costly, as well as time-consuming.
